Troy Carter is the Director of the Basic Plasma Science Facility, a national user facility for experimental plasma science supported by DOE and NSF. He is also the director of the Plasma Science and Technology Institute, an Organized Research Unit that serves the campus plasma science research community. His research is primarily focused on laboratory experiments, but is motivated by seeking to understand processes relevant to space and astrophysical plasmas as well as fusion energy. His work relevant to space plasma physics has included the linear and nonlinear physics of plasma waves, magnetic reconnection, and turbulence. He is a fellow of the APS and serves on a number of advisory committees including the DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee and the Fachbeirat (Scientific Advisory Board) for the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Germany.
